UNDERSTANDING MACROECONOMIC THEORY
At each point in time, individuals in an economy are making choices with respect to the acquisition, sale, and/or use of a variety of different goods. Such activity can be summarized by aggregate variables such as an economy’s total production of various goods and services, the aggregate level of unemployment, the general level of interest rates, and the overall level of prices. Macroeconomics is the study of movements in such economy wide variables as output, employment, and prices.
The focus of this book is on developing simple theoretical models that provide insight into the reasons for fluctuations in such aggregate variables. These models explore how shocks or “impulses” to the economy (e.g., changes to technology, the money supply, or government policy) impact individuals’ behaviour in specific markets and the resulting implications in terms of changes in aggregate variables.
This book will provide the reader with an in-depth understanding of standard theoretical models: Walrasian, Keynesian and Neoclassical. Understanding Macroeconomic Theory is written in a concise, accessible style and will be an indispensable tool for all students who wish to gain firm grounding in the complexities of macroeconomic theories.

PLAN B-2.0
In this new edition, Lester Brown outlines a survival strategy for our early twenty-first century civilization.
The world faces numerous environmental trends of disruption and decline such as rising temperatures, falling water tables, shrinking forests, melting glaciers, collapsing fisheries, and rising sea levels. In “Plan B,” Lester R. Brown notes that in ignoring nature’s deadlines for dealing with these environmental issues, we risk the disruption of economic progress.
In addition to these environmental trends, the world faces the peaking of oil, the addition of 70 million people per year, a widening global economic divide, and the spread of international terrorism. The global scale and growing complexity of issues facing our fast-forward world have no precedent.

ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIOLOGY 2ND/ED
This new edition of John Hannigan’s well-known and respected text has been thoroughly revised to reflect recent conceptual and empirical advances in environmental sociology. The book offers a distinctive and even-handed treatment of environmental issues and debates, integrating European theoretical contributions such as risk society and ecological modernization with North American empirical insights and findings. The key updates include: an extended discussion of how classic sociological theory relates to contemporary environmental sociology; a critical overview of contemporary interdisciplinary perspectives, namely co-constructionist theories of ‘socionature’; a focus on cultural sociologies of the environment, notably discourse analysis and social framing; updated coverage of the environmental justice movement and grassroots mobilizations; a review of the linkages between environmental sociology and the sociology of disasters; and, a brand new case history chapter on the escalating global conflict over freshwater resources.
Making a strong case for centrally incorporating power relations into a realist / constructionist model of environmental knowledge, politics and policy-making, this book includes a comparative analysis of the USA, Britain and Canada, and will prove a valuable student resource.

ECONOMICS DEVELOPMENT, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND THE ENVIRONMENT
The book examine the policy of free trade and its impact on the environment of developing economies, as well as the question of compatibility between the absence of intra-generational altruism and the nation of sustainable development. Finally, the book looks at the problem of the depletion of non-renewable natural resources and the ways of reducing or stopping such depletion in some cases, and developing alternatives to some resources such as petroleum.

THE UNDERCOVER ECONOMIST
Who makes most money from the demand for cappuccinos early in the morning at Waterloo Station? Why is it impossible to get a foot on the property ladder? How does the Mafia make money from laundries when street gangs pushing drugs don’t? Who really benefits from immigration? How can China, in just fifty years, go from the world’s worst famine to one of the greatest economic revolutions of all time, lifting a million people out of poverty a month? Looking at familiar situations in unfamiliar ways, THE UNDERCOVER ECONOMIST is a fresh explanation of the fundamental principles of the modern economy, illuminated by examples from the streets of London to the booming skyscrapers of Shanghai to the sleepy canals of Bruges. Leaving behind textbook jargon and equations, Tim Harford will reveal the games of signals and negotiations, contests of strength and battles of wit that drive not only the economy at large but the everyday choices we make.

KNOWLEDGE AND THE WEALTH OF NATIONS
In 1980, the twenty-four year old graduate student Paul Romer tackled one of the oldest puzzles in economics. Eight years later he solved it. This book tells the story of what has come to be called the new growth theory: the paradox identified by Adam Smith more than two hundred years earlier, its disappearance and occasional resurfacing in the nineteenth century, the development of new technical tools in the twentieth century, and finally the student who could see further than his teachers.
Fascinating in its own right, new growth theory helps to explain dominant first-mover firms like IBM or Microsoft, underscores the value of intellectual property, and provides essential advice to those concerned with the expansion of the economy. Like James Gleick’s Chaos or Brian Greene’s The Elegant Universe, this revealing book takes us to the frontlines of scientific research; not since Robert Heilbroner’s classic work The Worldly Philosophers have we had as attractive a glimpse of the essential science of economics.
