COLLABORATIVE OWNERSHIP AND THE DIGITAL ECONOMY
Open source software is considered by many to be a novelty and the open source movement a revolution. Yet the collaborative creation of knowledge has gone on for as long as humans have been able to communicate. CODE looks at the collaborative model of creativity — with examples ranging from collective ownership in indigenous societies to free software, academic science, and the human genome project — and finds it an alternative to proprietary frameworks for creativity based on strong intellectual property rights.
Intellectual property rights, argues Rishab Ghosh in his introduction, were ostensibly developed to increase creativity; but today, policy decisions that treat knowledge and art as if they were physical forms of property actually threaten to decrease creativity, limit public access to creativity, and discourage collaborative creativity. “Newton should have had to pay a license fee before being allowed even to see how tall the ‘shouldeof giants’ were, let alone to stand upon them,” he writes.
The contributoto CODE, from such diverse fields as economics, anthropology, law, and software development, examine collaborative creativity from a variety of perspectives, looking at new and old forms of creative collaboration and the mechanisms emerging to study them. Discussing the philosophically resonant issues of ownership, property, and the commons, they ask if the increasing application of the language of property rights to knowledge and creativity constitutes a second enclosure movement — or if the worldwide acclaim for free software signifies a renaissance of the commons. Two concluding chapteoffer concrete possibilities for both alternatives, with one proposing the establishment of “positive intellectual rights” to information and another issuing a warning against the threats to networked knowledge posed by globalization.

THE PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY
At a time of increasingly rapid environmental deterioration, sustainability is one of the most important issues facing the world. Can we create a sustainable society? What would that mean? How should we set about doing it? How can we bring about such a profound change in the way things are organized?
This text tackles these questions directly. It goes beyond rhetoric to explain the deeper issues of sustainable development in a way that seeks to be accessible and interesting to the non-specialist reader. It covers: historical development of the concept of sustainability; contemporary debates about how to achieve it; and obstacles and the prospects for overcoming them. The work should be useful to students, academics and activists concerned with sustainable development. It assumes no previous knowledge of the subject

LIMITS TO GROWTH
In 1972, The Limits to Growth shocked the world and forever changed the global agenda by demonstrating that unchecked growth on our finite planet was leading planet earth towards ecological ‘overshoot’ and pending disaster. Employing computer modelling and hard data, the book went on to sell 13 million of copies and ignited a firestorm of controversy that burns hotter than ever in our days of soaring oil prices, wars for resources and human-induced climate change. This substantially revised, expanded and updated edition follows on from The Limits to Growth and its sequel Beyond the Limits, which raised the alarm that we have already over-shot the planet’s carrying capacity. Marshalling a vast array of new data, more powerful computer modelling and incorporating the latest thinking on sustainability, ecological foot printing and limits, this new book presents future overshoot scenarios and makes an even more urgent case for a rapid readjustment of the global economy toward a sustainable path. This is compelling, essential and indeed necessary reading for all concerned with our common future.
